Assessing Preservation & Conservation Needs
  • Preservation: Non-invasive measures aimed at preventing further deterioration of holdings
Conservation: Measures to repair or restore or to apply a treatment to a holding, thereby changing it

This discussion is about how archivists make the call on what preservation measures are appropriate and when the conservation measures may be called for. To deacidify or not? Is repairing paper tears, rebinding books and such appropriate or is the damage part of the object's history? Recognizing our limitations and being conservative in our approach so we do no harm.
